U16S - SEMI FINALS 2022
ACH GROUP STADIUM, SATURDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER, 1:30PM
GLENELG

SOUTH ADELAIDE

In the second semi-final, U16 juggernaut Glenelg will host reigning premier South Adelaide in a rematch of last season’s decider.

Both sides are loaded with talent, with 12 players across the two sides included in the initial 51-man 2022 Torrens University SA U16 squad.

Glenelg finished the season in powerful fashion, winning seven of the last eight matches by an average margin of 72 points.

South Adelaide started the season in fine form, sitting pretty at 9-2 at round 11 before dropping three of their last six.

The Panthers beat Glenelg by three points when the clubs met in round six then by 40 points in round eight, but the Bays hit back in emphatic fashion in round 13, winning by 86 points.

Charlie McAuliffe was dominant in that Tigers’ win, collecting 30 disposals, six marks and two goals.

He’ll be joined in the side by the Camporeale-twins, Lucas and Ben, who combined for 67 possessions, 12 marks and five goals in the last minor round game against Central District.

South Adelaide’s on-ball brigade will be no push-over though, even with SA U16 captain Sid Draper sidelined through injury.

SA deputy vice-captain Phoenix Hargrave has been at his productive best this season, averaging 25.4 disposals, 7.8 marks, 5.2 tackles, 4.5 clearances, 7.5 inside-50s and a goal in 13 U16 matches.

He’s been well supported by Cohen Shortridge, who has booted 25 majors and averaged 6.9 marks in 17 matches.

Shortridge played a massive role in South’s round eight win over Glenelg, booting four goals from 30 disposals and 18 marks in a best-on-ground display.

Panthers speedster and SA U16 representative Benny Barrett could be the game-breaker South Adelaide need to book their spot in the grand final.

Not only a prolific ball-winner at the contest who is able to burst away from traffic at pace (averaging 6.4 clearances), Barrett is also an accurate kick inside-50 and tackling machine when utilised inside-50.

Glenelg skipper Archer Rouvray will lead his side into battle at ACH Group Stadium. Another who has missed a number of SANFL U16 games throughout the season with college commitments, his stoppage nous and leadership will be invaluable throughout the finals.

KEY MATCHUP

Charlie McAuliffe (Glenelg) v Phoenix Hargrave (South)

There are mouth-watering match-ups all over the ground, but the potential head-to-head battle between prolific midfielders Charlie McAuliffe and Phoenix Hargrave will be tantalising.

Both players have had outstanding years and have proven to be leaders of their respective on-ball units. Their ability to not only win the ball at the coalface but push forward to hit the scoreboard has been impressive.

SANFL U16, U18 live stream: Camporeale twins Ben and Lucas leading charge for Glenelg

Twin brothers Ben and Lucas Camporeale reckon they may be easier to tell apart on the field than off it.

The sons of Carlton great and former Adelaide assistant coach Scott Camporeale – Ben a right-footer and Lucas a left-footer – are leading the charge for Glenelg as it hunts a SANFL under-16 premiership.

The Tigers, who finished as under-16 minor premiers, can secure a spot in the grand final with a win over the Panthers on Saturday.

Ben said the brothers were looking forward to the finals with Glenelg after splitting their time this year between SANFL, school commitments with Sacred Heart College and playing for SA at the under-16 national championships.

“I think the team has great chemistry … hopefully we can all the way, share it with everyone and with my twin brother,” Ben said.

“We’ve had some success together in club footy so to hopefully top it off with a SANFL premiership would be great.”

Aside from kicking with different feet, the 16-year-old twins are forging different styles with Lucas making a name for himself on the wing and Ben developing into a half-back who can also run onball.

Lucas said he felt lucky to always have Ben by his side.

“I don’t really get a break from him,” Lucas joked.

“I can’t complain though, you’ve always got someone to have a kick at the oval with, we keep each other motivated but we’re pretty competitive as well.”

The brothers, who have come through the PHOS Camden and then Brighton football clubs, also cover the ground well like their famous father – a premiership player, All-Australian and best and fairest winner with Carlton.

“Dad’s always there to help us with anything we need, so we’re really lucky to have someone there who’s been there and done it all,” Lucas said.

Ben and Lucas have shown promise this year following strong performances at the national championships in July along with starring at under-16 level with Glenelg.

In the final minor round, Ben kicked three goals and racked up 32 touches while Lucas recorded 35 disposals of his own along with two majors.

Glenelg talent manager and under-16 coach Darren Trevena said the pair had bright futures.

“Both the boys have come on really well and have been rewarded for their hard work this year,” Trevena said.

“In some ways they’re the same but different and each offer the team a lot.”

Kallan Bevan, Archer Rouvray, Kieren Scannell and Charlie McAuliffe would also be key to Glenelg’s finals chances, according to Trevena.

Glenelg 8.13.61 SAFC 7.13.55

Glenelg booked a berth in the 2022 U16 Torrens University Cup title-decider after holding off South Adelaide by six points in the Second Semi-Final at ACH Group Stadium.

Despite leading at every change, the minor premier Tigers were never comfortably in control of the contest as the Panthers’ got within less than a kick during the fourth term.

A goal to South’s Jay Chapman in the 14th minute of the final quarter cut the deficit to just two points before Glenelg’s William Freckleton replied two minutes later to stretch his side’s advantage back out to eight.

Star South on-baller Phoenix Hargrave kicked the final two behinds of the game which left his team short, ahead of this Saturday’s Preliminary Final against Woodville-West Torrens at Thebarton Oval.

Tigers Oliver Betterman (20 disposals), Max Disbury and Jack Walters were lauded by their coaching staff for performing their roles in the victory.

The Panthers listed Hargrave (19 disposals, six tackles, five clearances, one goal), Benny Barrett (21 disposals, one goal) and Jacob Sheean as their top players as they now prepare to face the Eagles.

Woodville-West Torrens claimed its maiden U16 Torrens University Cup Premiership with a convincing 40-point victory over minor premier Glenelg at Adelaide Oval.

Coach Darren Hams’ Eagles were dominant after quarter time as Tom Luck claimed best on ground honours after an outstanding performance through the ruck.

Glenelg forward Harry Plews booted the first major within two minutes before 2024 eligible father-son prospect Lucas Camporeale added a second to increase the Tigers’ early lead.

Harry Piggott soccered through the Eagles’ first of the game at the nine-minute mark, but the Bays defence was able to keep Eagles key forward Tyler Welsh under wraps to take a four-point lead into quarter time.

However it took Welsh, the son of former Crow Scott, just a minute into the second term to hit the scoreboard, taking a trademark strong grab on the lead and converting the set-shot from inside-50.

As the game wore on, Torrens University SA U16 ruckman Tom Luck started to take advantage of his size and strength advantage to give the Eagles midfielders first use at stoppages, whilst dropping back to take a couple of important defensive marks.

Rome Burgoyne, the son of Power great Peter, mopped up brilliantly in the defensive-50 and Eagles skipper Jett Hasting began to work his way into the game in the middle.

Eagles forward Zane Peucker snapped his first of the evening as Woodville-West Torrens took control of the clearances and inside-50s to lead by ten points at the main change.

After the break, Welsh combined his vice-like hands overhead with a lovely one-touch pick-up at ground level as the 2022 U16 All-Australian added two more goals to his tally.

As the rain began to fall, a second major to Peucker and Logan Hughes’ first made it seven goals in a row for the Eagles as they extended their lead to 28-points at three-quarter time.

Despite the slippery conditions, Tyler Welsh booted his fourth from a set shot and Zane Peucker nailed his third in the dying stages to add further icing to the cake.

Luck took three contested marks, gathered 28 disposals and won 23 hitouts as the Eagles edged the Bays in clearances 31-17 and inside-50s 51-42.

Hasting finished with 22 possessions, six marks, seven tackles and four clearances while Zac Schwarz gathered 17 disposals and laid seven tackles for the victors.

Despite the result, Charlie McAuliffe was at his prolific best in the Tigers engine room, gathering 30 disposals, six clearances and seven inside-50s.

Oliver Betterman did all he could across half-back, providing six rebound-50s from 23 disposals, while Lucas Camporeale’s foot skills and courage in the air stood out for the Tigers, as he added 26 disposals, seven marks and six inside 50s to his goal.
