SEMI FINALS
2022 U18S SEASON
ACH GROUP STADIUM
SATURDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER, 11:00AM

Glenelg and Sturt will face off in another do-or-die clash in the U18 Torrens University Cup after their respective league sides did battle last weekend.

Both clubs will be confident of progressing, having claimed important scalps in the final minor round while also regaining a handful of big-name college players.

Despite Lachlan Scannell missing the year through injury, the Bays will be eager to go one step further after going down to Woodville-West Torrens in the 2021 decider.

Standing in their road are is a Double Blues side which has bounced back strongly after collecting the wooden spoon last year.

Albeit inconsistent at-times, Sturt has played a strong brand of football this season, claiming wins against all clubs except the Bays.

They’ll be boosted by the return of son-of-a-gun Luca Slade, who will play an important role for the Double Blues after starring all season with Prince Alfred College.

His college affiliation restricted the versatile bottom-ager to just ten U18 matches, but he still averaged 19.9 disposals. 5.1 marks, 3.7 tackles and over a goal per game.

Glenelg claimed an emphatic 79-point win over the Double Blues in round three, when forwards Jayden Davis and Ashton Moir combined to boot nine goals. But the clubs’ round 11 meeting was much closer, with first-year coach Jared Millington’s boys getting over the line by just three points after a late Davis major.

Although Moir and Davis will both miss the finals, Glenelg’s returning college contingency will loom large.

Torrens University SA U18 representatives Jakob Ryan, Archie Lovelock and Jake Walker will be joined in the side by Bowen Payne, Jake Pavia-Amato, Beau Symonds, Ben Dewhirst and Chester Forster.

Ryan Wurfel and Bodie Ryan will also make their returns to football after stints out through injury, but Charlie Hildyard remains sidelined with a knee complaint.

In the absence of their college-aligned stars, Tigers midfielders Hayden Brokensha and Ben Ridgway have been impressive.

Brokensha’s running power and ball use on the outside has been noticeable, averaging 23.6 disposals at 83% efficiency in 16 matches.

While on the inside, strong bodied skipper Ridgway has averaged 23.8 touches, 5.8 tackles and 4.3 clearances in 15 games as a bottom-ager.

To combat Glenelg’s talented midfield unit, Sturt will seek strong performances from Kobe McEntee and George Pope, who have proven to be consistent performers in a well-rounded Double Blues outfit.

Going forward, plenty of responsibility will rest in the hands of Chad Reschke, the competition’s leading goal kicker.

Strong in the air and an accurate kick for goal, Reschke booted 63 majors in 16 matches – 13 majors clear of second-placed Bloods tall Tom Scully.

Reschke doesn’t need much of the ball to have a big impact on the outcome, registering a haul of seven goals in round one and two bags of six in rounds 16 and 18. He booted five of Sturt’s 11 goals when they played the Bays their second 2022 meeting.

KEY MATCHUP

Chad Reschke (Sturt) v Jakob Ryan (Glenelg)

Reschke has often been the main man in attack for the Double Blues this season, so stopping his marking dominance inside-50 will be at the top of the Bays agenda.

With his ability to lock down an opponent and control the airways down back, Jakob Ryan may be the best option. He has the speed to match Reschke on the lead then can look to make the Sturt forward work hard defensively.

If Millington prefers to free-up Ryan or push him up to a wing, Glenelg could task talls Brandon Smith or Jack McAuley with the job.

Sturt must be weary of being overly reliant on Reschke inside-50, with goals from their midfielders set to be vital.

Davis was an over-ager and played the last 6 or so matches in the reserves, dunno re Moir, he's a massive loss, talk of a first round draft pick 12 months from now

Glenelg 11.12.78 Sturt 11.10.76

By ZAC MILBANK
Glenelg kept its U18 Torrens University Cup campaign alive with a nail-biting two-point win against a gallant Sturt in the First Semi-Final at ACH Group Stadium.

The Double Blues looked set for victory when star forward Chad Reschke’s fifth goal gave them a seven-point lead with less than 10 minutes to play.

But the Bays’ Ethan Murdock hit back two minutes later with his second goal, trimming the margin to just one point in the 18th minute.

Three consecutive behinds for the hosts before the final siren proved the difference in an incredibly even contest, in which Sturt led by as much as 14 points when Finn Wakelin goaled in the seventh minute of the final term.

Glenelg midfielder Archie Lovelock, invited to the State AFL Combine next month, was a standout with his 31 disposals, seven marks and five tackles while Kynan Dunn and Will Trevena were also praised for their efforts.

Dashing utility Jakob Ryan had an impact with 30 disposals while Tigers’ captain Ben Ridgway finished with 28 disposals, nine tackles, five clearances and a goal.

Sturt’s George Pope was selected as his side’s best performer while Reschke continued to fight hard for the Blues with his five goals coming from seven kicks and seven marks.

Ollie Reilly, Will Torode and Nick Sadler were also among the visitors’ best players.

Glenelg 10.7.67
Norwood 8.13.61

By ZAC MILBANK

Glenelg held on grimly to advance to the U18 Torrens University Cup Grand Final after edging out Norwood by six points in the Preliminary Final at Thebarton Oval.

Coming off a nail-biting two-point win against Sturt in the First Semi-Final, the Tigers appeared set to win in comfortable fashion midway through the third term against the Redlegs.

Star Bays midfielder Archie Lovelock opened up a commanding 28-point lead with his goal approaching the 12th minute of the third quarter, the fourth in succession for his side after leading by just three points at half-time.

But from here, it was all the Redlegs as they stormed back into contention with 13 of the next 14 scoring shots for the rest of the contest.

Inaccuracy in front of goal proved pivotal for the Legs, who finished with 8.13 to the Bays’ 10.7, as they got within a point 12 minutes into the last term.

Tiger Jack McAuley kicked a vital goal for his team to stretch its advantage back out to seven points before Redleg Beau Baldwin kicked a behind approaching the 17th minute.

It would be the last score for the game as Norwood was left to rue its ascendancy in scoring shots (21-17), clearances (33-29) and hit outs (39-21).

Hard-running midfielder Lovelock was ranked as the Bays’ best player for the second final in succession after tallying 26 disposals, seven marks, five tackles and a goal.

Fellow Torrens University SA U18 regulars Jake Walker (25 disposals, five marks, four clearances) and Jakob Ryan (30 disposals, eight marks) were also influential for Glenelg.

Tigers Ethan Murdock, Harvey Lambert and Ryan Wurfel kicked two goals each.

Norwood midfielder Josh Bradford was outstanding with 30 disposals, 12 clearances and six tackles as he made the most of ruck teammate Alex Van Wyk’s (19 disposals, seven clearances, 34 hit outs, one goal) dominance.

Redlegs forwards Phoenix Foster and Harvey Pedler kicked two goals each.

Glenelg will now prepare for the U18 Torrens University Cup Grand Final against North Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Friday September 16 at 7.30pm.

Glenelg overcame an inaccurate North Adelaide by eight points in the U18 Torrens University Cup Grand Final at Adelaide Oval in a see-sawing affair to redeem last season’s title-decider defeat.

Classy Bays utility Archie Lovelock claimed the Alan Stewart Medal after a standout display which saw him gather 35 disposals, eight marks, five clearances, seven inside-50s, five rebounds and a goal.

Glenelg forward Eli Redman booted two first term goals but North Adelaide dominated proceedings in the first term, winning almost all the major statistics.

However, the Roosters weren’t able to capitalise on the scoreboard, booting six straight behinds before Billy Dowling broke the deadlock to ensure the two sides couldn’t be separated at the first break.

The Roosters again looked capable of breaking open the game in the second term, but Glenelg’s defence weathered the storm before Billy Dowling found Oliver Dignan inside-50 who kicked truly.

Dignan added another before half-time, this time from general play, to give the Roosters a ten-point advantage at half-time.

Glenelg came out firing after the break, with Archie Lovelock and skipper Ben Ridgway propelling the Tigers forward.

Lovelock marked strongly in attack after a clever soccer kick launched the Bays deep inside-50, then wingman Chester Forster added another to make the Roosters pay for earlier inaccuracies.

Swingman Jack McAuley ran onto a loose ball out the back to make it three Glenelg goals in a row, before North Adelaide’s own versatile tall Shaun Bennier launched a set-shot which sailed over the big sticks following a strong grab.

Rooster Jed Dignan added another minutes before the three-quarter time siren sounded to wrestle back the momentum from the Tigers.

Bays skipper and McCallum Tomkins Medallist Ben Ridgway nailed a major to take back the lead, but North star Oliver Dignan kicked the immediate reply with a sensational set shot from a tricky angle in the south-western pocket.

Five minutes later, onlookers could have been excused for assuming Dignan’s snap goal, his fourth, would kick-start North Adelaide’s Grand Final weekend with a win.

It wasn’t to be as Eli Redman booted his third and Jack McAuley his second to hand Glenelg the match-winning lead.

In a thrilling game which saw six lead changes, Glenelg half-back Jakob Ryan was again outstanding with his marking and distribution, gathering 29 disposals and ten marks.

Dashing half-back Hayden Brokensha completed a terrific year with 25 disposals and seven rebounds, with on-ballers Jake Walker, Chester Forster and Jake Pavia-Amato also among the Bays’ best.

Hughen Wissman was terrific in the middle for North Adelaide, accumulating 27 disposals and laying a game-high 12 tackles in the trenches.

Billy Dowling and Kane McAuliffe both had 26 disposals and the smart Max Blacker managed 20 but the Bays held on to win their third game by under ten-points in as many weeks.

Rookie Me Central did some "Scouting Notes" on a few Bays lads for the Grand Final, written by the same guy who did the SANFL writeup quoted above.
Hopefully some of these lads push their way through to the Seniors.

Scouting Notes: 2022 SANFL U18s Grand Final
Tom Wyman

September 19, 2022

GLENELG took out the 2022 SANFL Under 18 premiership on Friday night, downing North Adelaide by eight points at Adelaide Oval. The result capped off a sensational postseason run for the Bays, who won all three knockout finals by single-digit margins.

...

GLENELG:

#4 Archie Lovelock

The form player of the competition claimed the Alan Stewart Medal as best on ground in the Under 18 decider. Lovelock was everywhere in the middle and at half-forward, and when the Bays got on their run in the third term, it was Lovelock who took a mark deep inside 50 and nailed just their third goal of the game. The classy midfielder had the ball on a string, winning it in congestion but also getting his hands to it away from stoppages and in general play where he was able to use his clean skills to hurt the opposition. Alongside his 35 possessions, Lovelock took eight marks (two contested), laid seven tackles, won five clearances, seven inside 50s and five rebounds in a scintillating performance to cap off a terrific year across multiple levels.

#5 Ben Ridgway

Glenelg skipper Ridgway was terrific when the Bays needed someone to step up in the middle against a star-studded North on-ball unit. He was one of the catalysts for Glenelg’s terrific start after half time, winning the ball in the coalface and pushing forward to hit the scoreboard from a stoppage inside 50. As we’ve come to expect from Ridgway, the McCallum Tomkins Medalist used his strong body to apply pressure of the Roosters mids and tried to bullock his way through stoppages. He finished with 28 disposals, five marks, seven tackles and seven inside 50s.

#7 Jake Walker

Walker provided a touch of class in the midfield. Not only was he the second-leading clearance winner on the ground, Walker used the ball beautifully going inside 50. In a typical performance from the Prince Alfred College star and SA Under 18 representative, Walker didn’t need an abundance of the ball to have a meaningful impact on the game. He managed 21 touches, four marks, five tackles and seven inside 50s.

#10 Eli Redman

Glenelg forward Redman was pivotal in the Bays triumph, booting three goals including the first two of the game. His first came within the first five minutes of the match, as Redman curled home a ripper from long-range to kickstart the Bays. He converted another couple of shots, including a late one in the fourth term when Glenelg were down by three points. He had eight touches, three marks and three inside 50s.

#12 Jakob Ryan

The ever-reliable Ryan was sound down back. He made a rare early error by foot, turning it over exiting the defensive 50, but didn’t let that stop him from backing in his skills for the rest of the game. Ryan’s foot skills over short and long distances were excellent, and were matched by his cleanliness in the air. He knew when to come off his direct opponent and intercept, but was equally solid defending one-on-one. Charged with the kick-in duties, he set up the play nicely from half-back but pushed forward to send the Bays inside 50 on seven occasions. He gathered 29 disposals, ten marks and seven inside 50s.

#13 Hayden Brokensha

The reliable Brokensha capped off a fantastic season in the yellow and black with another solid outing in the decider. Playing mainly off half-back, Brokensha along with Jakob Ryan, provided some meaningful rebound for the Tigers. His clean kicking was a feature, so to overhead marking. Brokensha had 25 disposals, took six grabs and recorded seven rebound 50s.

#31 Jack McAuley

When Glenelg needed a marking target in attack, McAuley was the man they turned to. After getting the Bays over the line last week with a strong second-half performance, McAuley booted another two after half time in the Grand Final to secure the premiership. He took a couple of terrific grabs in attack, booting a set-shot then pouncing on a loose ball out the back and finishing well. He only had the eight touches but took two contested marks and provided the focal point Glenelg needed up forward.
